Diagnostic skills are essential to the practice of oral and maxillofacial sugery. Findings from the patient history and the clinical examination are used to create the differential diagnosis and to assign a clinical diagnosis. Available adjunctive tests, including two- and three-dimensional imaging, may selectively facilitate the diagnostic process. Tissue biopsy in the context of the clinical diagnosis often provides a final diagnosis; however, tissue evaluation may require the use of immunohistochemical or molecular testing. Patient follow-up is essential to the diagnostic process and should be an important management strategy for all patients.
